Hair Extensions Care Advice

Clip in Human Hair Extensions

Clip in human hair extensions are luxurious and fashionable hair accessories that are a great option for women who want to increase the length and volume of their hair. Whether you are bored with having short hair or if you want to hide a bad haircut, hair extensions can be a life saver. With proper hair care and maintenance, certain types of hair extensions can last for months or even years in some cases.

1Looking After Your Clip in Human Hair Extensions

It is unlikely that you can wear your hair extensions regularly or have then last a good amount of time without any maintenance or treatment. The good news is however, that the way you care for your hair extensions is not too different from the way you care for your own hair. Here are some tips on keeping clip in human hair extensions looking fabulous:

2Be Gentle When Caring for Clip in Human Hair Extensions

Sometimes we all tend to be a bit too rough when caring for our own hair. It’s however, very important to be extremely gentle when caring for hair extensions. Brushing or styling the extensions too roughly can cause the hair to fall out, break or have the ends split.

Being too rough with clip-in extensions may cause the clip to become exposed or weaken the hair itself causing it to break – remember that the hair which makes up any kind of hair extensions is cut hair, which looses its moisture over time. This loss in moisture can cause the hair to break or the end to split naturally over time, therefore, you should exercise a more gentle approach when styling or maintaining your hair extensions as they age.

3How to Wash Your Extensions

You can wash your extensions with them in your hair, however, we recommend that you take them out and wash them separately as we tend to be rougher with our own hair.

Unless you use them regularly, we suggest that you only wash them a maximum of twice a week. Before you wash your hair extensions, brush them until all knots are removed. Keep the hair dry and apply shampoo to the dry hair. Leave in for 10 minutes, and then wash out in straight strokes under the shower – from the roots to the tips. Allow the hair to dry naturally, do not rub or scrub the hair at all.

4Use Moisturising Shampoos and Conditioners on Extensions

Human hair extensions are prone to heat damage as the hair is cut and will therefore loose moisture over time. Therefore, it is ideal to use moisturising shampoos and conditioners whenever possible. Consider asking your hair stylist to recommend a line of products that will be suitable for your extensions. Doing a deep conditioning masque once every one to two weeks is also ideal for keeping the hair hydrated.

You may use a wash in, wash out conditioner on the ends of your hair for added hydration, but do not wash hair everyday, this will encourage premature loosening of your hair extensions. Try to stay away from greasy products, they have too many chemicals in, which will strip the hair and make it very dry. Hair after care serums are fantastic at maintaining and restoring the moisture of the hair and we recommend regular use of these products on your hair extensions and your own hair.

5Prevent Hair Damage due to Heat-Styling Tools

Nothing looks worse than frizzy and broken hair, which are both common problems among women who use curling irons or flat irons to curl or straighten their hair. Consider limiting how often you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron on your hair extensions. A heat protectant spray should also be used on hair extensions to reduce the risk of heat damage.

6Keep those ends trimmed

No matter what you do, your hair extensions will inevitably get split ends. The best way to keep split ends from getting out of control is to regularly trim them. Trim the ends of the hair every 6 to 10 weeks. Keep in mind that you don’t want to trim too much, otherwise you will quickly lose the length of your hair. You can either do it yourself or have a professional trim them.

Conclusion

The most important thing to keep in mind is that since human hair extensions are made from authentic human hair, it is best to care for them as you would your own hair. The main difference is that you should be gentler when caring for extensions. The regular, but gentle maintenance of your clip in hair extensions should see them fit to last you at least 6 months, sometimes longer.
